Why choose stainless steel lock bolts?

The main advantage of stainless steel lock bolts is that they do not rust. But when do you choose stainless steel lock bolts? And in which situation can you better prevent the use of stainless steel lock bolts? In this blog we explain in detail which constructions you choose for stainless steel lock bolts, and in which cases it is better to choose a different fastening. Lock bolts are always supplied complete with nut and washer at Wovar! That seemed so useful to us.

Lock bolt stainless steel VS lock bolts galvanized

The stainless steel lock bolts from Wovar are made from a2 stainless steel. The difference between stainless steel carriage bolts and zinc plated steel carriage bolts is mainly the rust formation. Galvanized carriage bolts rust when the zinc layer is damaged in damp areas. This is not the case with stainless steel a2 carriage bolts. The disadvantage, however, is that stainless steel a2 carriage bolts are less strong than galvanized carriage bolts. This is because stainless steel is softer than galvanized steel.

When do I choose stainless steel lock bolts?

We always recommend choosing stainless steel lock bolts for use in your garden. Galvanized carriage bolts will rust faster and therefore have to be replaced sooner. For light constructions such as building a shelter for firewood or making a garden cupboard for your containers, it is no problem to choose stainless steel M8 carriage bolts. Because these do not rust, the wood also remains beautiful for longer! Buy soft close drawers for your house.

When galvanized carriage bolts develop rust, you will see that the rusty color is reflected on the wood, which can cause large brown circles. Stainless steel lock bolts are also widely used for attaching sheeting planks to hardwood azobe posts. Because these are underground after assembly, they are difficult to replace when they are rusted through.

Why still choose zinc plated lock bolts?

For heavier constructions such as swings or other playground equipment, we notice that a lot of choice is made for galvanized lock bolts. This is not only because they are stronger, but also a lot cheaper! For example, with these constructions, you should already opt for thicker stainless steel lock bolts such as m10 or even m12! This has a completely different price tag than when you choose lock bolts made of galvanized steel.
